What is the Wednesday Section?

The Wednesday Section is a highly active and well supported element of the golf club where a group of members meet, as the name suggests, on each Wednesday throughout the year between 12 and 2pm to play competitions.

The history of the Section goes back many years and was originally devised to enable members in retail and business who had to work on Saturdays to play competitive golf on a Wednesday afternoon, when they traditionally had time off work.

Today, the Section continues to be supported by such members but has now expanded to allow the others to participate, mostly those members who are retired and those who can get away from work for the afternoon.

We currently have 70 members of all ages demonstrating the strength and popularity of the Section.

Competition sheets are posted each week on the Section noticeboard and presentations to the winners are held weekly after each competition.

Throughout the year the Section plays a number of competitions at other courses. In recent years these have included clubs such as Stockport, Vale Royal, Hopwood and West Lancs. This year we visit Whitefield Golf Club.

In addition to the weekly medal and stableford competitions the Section also holds a fourball better ball knockout during the summer, as well as presenting an annual “Player of the Year” award. The Christmas competition is also very popular and well supported, with everyone receiving a prize of some description and it is here where the Professional and Assistants get the chance to show what they can do.

In summary, the Wednesday Section has been very active for many years and past Captains and Presidents have actively been involved as members. Long standing friendships have been formed and continue with the usual competitive banter always to the fore.

We actively encourage and welcome new members at all times and provide a friendly, well supported and successful group that allows members to play competitive golf during the week.
